How yoga can benefit your pregnancy and birth?

Revitalise your Energy

The calming practices are beneficial for the nervous and hormonal system during your pregnancy, whilst the more energising and strengthening practices are great for the cardiovascular system.

Ease Discomfort

The strength and flexibility focus of the postures can help ease back, neck, hip pain, and digestion. Learn how to modify along the way with each trimester as it brings about changes for your body.

Reduce Stress

Awareness and control of the breath is an effective tool during pregnancy to help calm and reduce anxiety. A wonderful technique to help with pain management, and focus to relax during labour.

Sacred Rite of Passage

Enhance the enjoyment of the pregnancy journey as a special and sacred time and encourage to honour yourself and baby within, whilst cultivating the benefits of self-love and nurturing.

Bond with Your Baby

Connect to your baby and embrace your pregnancy, our babies can hear sounds from as early as 18 weeks gestation. The mothers nervous system translates to the baby, the baby will receive this benefit of connection and ease too.

Improve Stamina

The woman is in the best possible shape for the challenges of labour (particularly for an Active Birth approach) and beyond and her body more able to recover quickly after bub has arrived.

Prepare your body

Prepare your body for the delivery of baby, through yoga, vocalisation, visualisation and breathing exercises. Strengthen your body to help aid in recovery post-birth with the pelvic floor and pelvic core exercises.

Calm Birth Techniques

Conscious relaxation will help you to stay present, relax and revive and refocus your energies. Breaking the ‘fear-tension cycle’, even when things get challenging and demanding, it is helpful during the labouring process.

Further questions…

  • It is not necessary to have previous yoga experience to attend our Prenatal Yoga classes. For many women it may be the first time they have practiced yoga. The classes cater for all levels of yoga students from beginners to advanced.  The class will offer different levels of yoga poses in relevant situations.  The classes are, obviously, structured for the pregnant woman and therefore the poses are quite specific and gentle.  You don't need to have any previous yoga experience to enjoy the classes and you should feel the benefits for you and your baby within the first few classes.

  • During the yoga for pregnancy class, you will practice classical yoga postures and tune into the consciousness of your growing baby. In the prenatal yoga class the unborn child is included in the postures and breathing exercises. The practices of meditation, breathing exercises, gentle yoga postures (asanas) and the development of right thinking are all designed to increase and balance the positive benefits of hormones present during pregnancy and labour, making it safer for both you and your baby.

  • Whilst it is possible and beneficial to practice a regular yoga class guided by a teacher who is aware of the pregnancy, there are greater benefits to attending a prenatal yoga class that is specifically designed for your growing baby and changes to your body. Each class allows you to feel safe and nurtured, challenged and at ease for the unique journey into pregnancy. Too often a standard practice will not honour the stages and modification for each trimester and sacredness of the journey towards birth and motherhood.

  • It is recommended that women avoid vigorous activity during the 11th to 14th week of the pregnancy and always check with their doctors before embarking on a new exercise regime. If you have not done yoga before becoming pregnant you are welcome to attend a prenatal yoga class.

  • During pregnancy the hormone Relaxin is released to allow the pelvis to open wider for childbirth. Therefore, it is important to focus on strengthening and avoid over stretching. You will be guided safely by your experienced yoga teacher and given options to vary the poses according to your specific pregnancy conditions.

  • During pregnancy, there is an added incentive to develop calmness and contentment – you are calm for two. The peace of heart experienced by the pregnant woman is also felt by her baby. It is not only essential to develop strength and stamina for labour, but beyond. It is also important to be happy and healthy while 'with child'. The deeper sense of relaxation and release of stress achieved through specific breathing techniques benefit both mother and unborn child. A regular practice assists women in achieving a more positive experience of pregnancy and birth.

  • If you are unable to attend for any reason, you can send us an email to request access to a pre-recorded class to practice in your own home.

Prepare for the journey ahead…
